Lead-based paint continues to be the most common source of exposure

We have published our latest report on Non-occupational lead absorption notifications for 2014-2025.

Here are the key findings:

  • In 2025, lead absorption notification rates decreased for adults and children aged 0–14 years compared with 2024.
  • Lead-based paint was the most common source of exposure, accounting for 26% of notifications since 2014.
  • Males aged 55–64 years had higher lead notification rates than males in other age groups.
  • European/Other individuals had the highest notification rate in 2024–25, about double that of the other ethnic groups.
  • The Whanganui and Southern districts had the highest lead notification rates in 2023–24 and 2024–25, respectively.
