Global infectious disease threats highlight importance of ongoing monitoring
We have published our latest report on Overseas infectious diseases of priority concern.
Here are the key findings:
- Poliovirus cases remained high in African countries in 2025, particularly Nigeria (73 cases),
Ethiopia (40 cases), and Chad (55 cases). - Mpox cases at the global level increased between 2023 (9,666 cases or 1.2 cases per million
people) and 2025 (53,562 cases, or 6.6 cases per million people. A surge of cases, including the
emergence of a new strain, led the WHO to declare Mpox a PHEIC again in August 2024 and to
maintain it as a PHEIC as of 2025. - Measles cases increased steadily between 2022 (25.7 cases per million people) and 2024 (82.8
cases per million people), and vaccination rates remained lower than optimal. - Non-seasonal influenza was reported in 3 countries in 2025, decreased from 10 countries in 2024.
