Subsidies drove rapid growth in the EV fleet
While electric vehicles (EVs) made up less than 2% of the light vehicle fleet in 2022, the light EV fleet grew rapidly between 2021-23, during the period that the Clean Car Discount was in effect.
Our latest surveillance of the number of motor vehicles in New Zealand shows that at the height of the EV subsidy scheme, one in five new light vehicle registrations were EVs.
Meanwhile, there were more vehicles on the road than ever before (4.6 million at the end of 2022) and the number of vehicles per person continues to rise (817 per 1,000 people).
Read all about it in our 'Number of Motor Vehicles' surveillance report.
