NZ vehicle fleet continues to grow, but EV uptake slows

Our surveillance reports on the fleet size and average age of vehicles in Aotearoa New Zealand have just been updated with data for 2024. 

After several years of strong growth, the uptake of electric vehicles stalled following the closure of the Clean Car Discount scheme in December 2023.

In 2024, 43.3% of light vehicles were at least 15 years old. The New Zealand light vehicle fleet is consistently around 2–4 years older on average than the fleets in similar countries.
