Fewer than half of all children walk or cycle to school
Considering the high child obesity rate in New Zealand, using active transport (that is, walking or cycling) to travel to or from school is an important way for children to get the recommended minimum of physical activity every day.
However, in 2020/21, fewer than half (43.1%) of all children used active transport to get to or from school. There has been no substantial change in this proportion since 2006/07.
