In 2018, there were 7,182 asthma-related hospitalisations (including wheeze) among children aged 0–14 years in New Zealand. 12 May 2020

In 2016, 42 children aged less than a year old died from SUDI. 11 May 2020

The prevalence of SUDI deaths has declined year-on-year between 2000 and 2016. However, SUDI accounts for roughly 18% of all infant deaths in this period.

Melanoma registrations and mortality 11 May 2020

In 2016, 362 people died from melanoma in New Zealand whilst in 2017 a further 2,550 new cases of melanoma were registered.

Socioeconomic deprivation profile update 8 May 2020

We have updated the Socioeconomic deprivation profile section on our webpage.     This section provides information on socioeconomic deprivation, using the New Zealand Index of Deprivation (NZDep).

Recent news

  • One-third of private dwellings in New Zealand used a wood burner or a pellet fire as their main type of heating in 2018
  • Notification rates for potentially waterborne diseases continued to be higher for children aged 0–4, people of European/Other, and people living in less deprived or rural areas.
  • 60% of New Zealanders on registered drinking-water supplies had access to fluoridated drinking-water, 2018–2019
  • 76% of New Zealanders (3.1 million) on registered supplies received drinking water that met all bacteriological, protozoal and chemical requirements.
  • In 2019, there were 463 unintentional hazardous substances-related hospitalisations, and the number of hospitalisations has decreased since 2006 (563 hospitalisations).
  • There were 352 traffic-related fatalities in 2019
